His Name is Christmas and He's 19!

Christmas Buddy a few weeks old

What a little man he is and sometimes quite the King of the house. Well not so much anymore, but in his day he ruled. Now he moves very slowly and needs some help, such as his own chair to get up onto the bed. Why he's been better than any man I ever married. This one stuck with the program to the end... Christmas Buddy sleeps at the top of my bed near my face. I dare not use too much face cream or I wake up looking like the abominable snowman! Eeeww. And if I turn over he wanders to the other side facing my face. I wake up on occasion and put my hand on him to give him reassurance. Maybe myself too. He has grown up with my children, especially my 19 year old daughter and 19 and 16 year old Granddaughters. Not to mention my 25 and 28 year old sons.
I watch him wondering if his quality of life is for me or him anymore. He sleeps 20 out of 24 hours a day. He sometimes gets lost in the shower starring at the wall meowing. Don't worry I get him. My Vet has told me twice (three years ago and one year ago) that he was in kidney failure. NOT! Got him some antibiotics and whalla he was trottin' around the house and enjoying some "huchie," catnip silly, on occasion. They even put him on IV fluids which I learned to do quickly. I gave him fluids every other day, (they said daily) and he still watered from his eyes and mouth...DUH, he was over fluidized! Again he was fine. Yes I am changing vets even after all these years. He likes his food more on the liquid side anymore but I can do that. I buy special litter that is lightweight and special litter that turns color if he has a bladder infection. Christmas loves Christmas because he hears his name on TV and from people passing by as well as his family. He has lived through several political elections, he's a liberal by the way, and 16 Proms and around 12 Homecomings, and five major moves, an in-house daycare for fifteen years, and four new vehicles. All went away, as well as his two buddies, Cody and Chris moved to California. He remembers them when they walk in and hold him like a baby. He has survived a sister that lived to be fifteen named PeeWee, yes after PeeWee Herman before he did his naughty. Obviously we got them on Christmas 1988. PeeWee's Playhouse was big on the charts. I found a stray cat named Lucy last year. Lucy is around two years old. Christmas puts up with her and can still hold his own, although I keep an eye out on them. They have never been declawed which has rarely been a problem. Can you imagine an active two year old girl wanting to play with a 99 year old man. It is funny because they just sit and swipe paws back and forth like taking turns. But they don't touch each other...just swipe..... I guess I am writing this because I know the time is drawing near that I will have to go on living without my best friend.
