Recently I hired a nice lady named Maria to work with me at my new business. This means some traveling around our city and at times SNOW considering we live in Wisconsin. The weatherman quoted me 37 inches of snow this December 2008. Now that is just nuts! Maria and I were doing alright through all that until yesterday when Maria, driving ahead of me.....(this was almost a case of stupid leading stupid, not that either of us are stupid! I just dont like the phrase, the blind leading the blind) when I noticed her old cool Mercedes sliding crooked down an ice covered hill twenty feet in front of me. She was working it, and got it to steer into the snowbank vs a car facing her at the bottom of the hill with a woman inside it on the phone. I say on the phone because even after Maria walked down the hill (on the side in crushed snow vs ice) and asked the lady to please move so she could slide down the hill unobstructed. The lady said, "Yes, but I have some phone calls to make first." WHAT?!? We sat there for half an hour while that Lady sat on her cell phone. Seriously. In the meantime I called the non emergency number for police and after the half hour Barney Fife shows up.That Skinny Officer missed it all! Maybe he had cell phone calls to make too huh? Me I ate my standard peanut butter and jelly sandwich with pretzels while phone lady finally got out of her car, opened her trunk, took a shovel out, shoveled her rear tire for 30 seconds (I think for our benefit) and drove away. Maria was trying to shovel her front tire out of the snow bank with a window scraper. Ya think that phone lady would have shared her shovel considering she made us sit there like fools for all that time. Then an older man and an overweight woman came with shovels to help Maria. While Barney Fife stood there "over-seeing." He was a young officer, but he didn't offer any assistance other than his power symbol of flashing lites. Me, I am not young enough to crawl up that ice hill anymore... Maria was able to slide down the hill the rest of the way and we drove away tipping a thank you to Barney Fife for his "lights and no action." Again, I am following Maria....who really isn't familiar with the area and drove head onto a one way street while I am honking crazy trying to stop her. Again I did not follow! But another van watching backed up and decided if she could do it they would too. And away they all went. I called Maria's cell and said, "Duh, you just turned onto a one way!" We both laughed, no one hurt. Sure glad Barney Fife didn't see that one.
